ADHD Aware Couples Course

The only course for neurodiverse couples in the UK!

Being part of a neurodiverse couple can bring both huge rewards and challenges.  Our couples' course is here to support you both with these.

Hosted by Karen Doherty and Yvonne Rivers, Karen is our trained couples’ psychotherapist (specialising in working with neurodiverse couples) and Yvonne has over 10 years' experience as our trained facilitator.

Together Karen and Yvonne offer a 7-week course open to couples who want to learn about neurodiversity and how it impacts relationships.  The course runs weekly in the evening (usually Thursday 7-9pm) and is based on our peer support model.

Please note whilst the course is facilitated by a trained psychotherapist this is not therapy. However, there are therapeutic benefits to being part of a peer support group.

Approach and Aims

This course is for couples, where one person in the couple is living with ADHD. The aim of the course is to support couples to better understand the dynamics and challenges in their relationships and to build on and develop their strategies to help address these. Specifically, the course will focus around the following 5 themes:

Communication

Emotional Regulation

Executive Functioning

Self Confidence

Intimacy and Empathy

What to expect

In preparation for each week participants are asked to tune into the theme for the following week to consider their experience as a couple and be ready to share their reflections, insights and experience in relation to the theme.

In each week there will be a brief overview in relation to the theme including relevant theories, evidence and case studies that highlight how dynamics can manifest in relationships when one partner is living with ADHD. There will be prompts for participants to reflect and share in relation to their own lives

How the facilitators will work together and with participants

Karen and Yvonne have developed an approach, clarified the content, and developed their ways of working together which ensures that participants have clarity about what is expected of them and what they can hope for from this course.

As part of Karen and Yvonne’s ongoing planning and weekly reflections they will be actively curious and open to adapting their approach so that it is most effective for the participants. We expect that there will be much learning along the way for facilitators and the participants.

Participant’s responsibilities

The course is an opportunity for participants to share experiences, insights and consider strategies in relation to the theme for each week. The intention is that participants will leave each session with a renewed sense of what to focus on that will help to address dynamics in their relationship.  Handouts will be sent out at the end of each week.
